Boston, Massachusetts based band, Sounds & Scenarios, have started their new year with not just one but two new singles. You might think they’re hedging their bets that if you don’t like the first one, the second record might spark your interest but it's simply because the band just loves releasing music for their fans!
The first single, ‘Stalemate’ is an intriguing track for this reviewer, when the band offering the single says it doesn’t fit the new EP which their currently working on and they wanted to hear it as a piece of music which can stand on its own, you tend to think this must be a track which will be less constructed and give you a insight of what the band are able to get up to when the limits are released from needing to be a big hit on a EP. But in fact it has that hearty rough and raw but power emo rock feel from the very start. Sounds & Scenarios make great transitions of tempo to allow the instrumental sections and vocals to flow into each other instead of challenging each other. The chorus has a catchy ability which the band will enjoy as I imagine live this track will be sung back to them, this record is a really good start to 2022 for Sounds & Scenarios and you can see this will mean they will carry over momentum to a future EP.
Then most people will have heard of ‘Hey Jealousy’ which is the band's cover of Gin Blossoms song, we were promised a twist to the classic alternative hit. It’s always challenging to take on a track which has been pitched to the best of its ability from a band like Gin Blossom before, ‘Hey Jealousy’ has the quality of being very relatable from the lyrics and paints a very vivid picture we can all remember being part of in our youth. But for us here at Off the Hook Music even though Sounds & Scenarios have done a good version of the record it’s just a little bit too close to the original versions but just a little bit rockier around the edges and their isn’t enough of a change of lanes to make it fully Sounds & Scenarios.
The cover track still doesn’t take away that the new material from Sounds & Scenarios is very exciting and we’re definitely looking forward to the new EP when it drops.
