I have listened to and loved many songs in my life but ‘Obsolescence’ isn’t one of them, and I’m sure I’ll soon forget it. The bleak and gloomy overtones were just too much for me and I found myself ground down to the point I needed some light relief in the form of the Spice Girls to brighten up.
Contrary to what you may think, Significant Other isn’t a band; it’s a solo project by Michael Wexler, a Canadian musician who once upon a time was the frontman of a band named Inlet Sound.
Inlet Sound were quite the opposite of Significant Other. Their songs were upbeat and very fast-paced, and not doom and gloom which at times Obsolescence has the habit of falling into.
There are some really great moments in this song where the lyrics stand up and give the record a focus and purpose, just the momentum of the instruments doesn’t back up the lyrics as one would like.
Wexler is a very talented man, but my personal opinion is this track doesn't stand up to his fantastic past material. He has great potential, but I think this is a step in the wrong direction. This track might be useful to fill the back of an album but just isn’t strong enough for a stand alone single!
