Being based in the South West of England, we here at Off the Hook Music have a front row seat to the amazing hotbed of music that thrives throughout Bristol. Today we feel we have unearthed another real highlight of this scene.
IOTA recorded their newest single ‘Take It’ in the Humm Studios in Bristol with Ben Johnson (Skindred, Chaouche) and Idles' Lee Kiernan, mixed by Tom Hennessy, and mastered by Pete Maher (Pixies, Jack White, The Rolling Stones). When speaking of the new single IOTA state “Take It was inspired by the fight with yourself in a multitude of circumstances, work, relationships, socially and mentally. The continuum of holding yourself back and having this other side to yourself that is constantly telling you, “you aren’t good enough, you won’t make anything of yourself”. The persistent reminder of how well everyone else is doing, social media controlling us and having a huge effect on us mentally. Constantly taking that push back and battling with your own mind as if it is a whole other person inside of you. We wrote the song during and before lockdown with Lee Kiernan who helped us build on the track instrumentally and melodically.”
The single itself is an explosion of rock energy at the beginning of the track like two atoms on a collision course and smashing into a huge reaction, the bass notes are heavy with a dirty in your face feel that gives the song some real attitude. When the lyrics are sung at you there is a stand up and notice me quality about them, this is a continuation of the attitude set within this track. IOTA use their sound textures and lyrics to shine a lot on the meaning of the track and makes you aware of that internal fight within oneself and this is a great reflection of telling the story they want to portray.
The best songs are the ones that are punchy, have a spirit of their own, and leave you wanting more and at a running time of just over two minutes this is exactly how we felt reviewing this track, any excuse for another listen to the record we have happily received.
